MG History.

So, at the 1962 London Motor Show, MG wheeled out their new car to considerable praise - and as they had with the MGA before it, the company made sure that marketing and sales emphasis was placed firmly on the US market. The UK press lauded the car; Motor magazine, for instance, commented that the MGB was a "delightful modern sports car with a marked bias towards the 'grand touring' character … a pleasure to drive." In those days, car magazines tended to be a little more circumspect in their language than they are today, but reading between the lines, it would appear that the road testers saw it more as an inexpensive GT roadster than an out-and-out sports car.

Today the MG badge is owned by The Rover Group and appears on sport versions of Rover saloons as well as the popular MGF two-seater model. Tastes and ideas may have changed in the modern world of car production, and indeed with the buying public, but no MG of today or of tomorrow will ever earn the loyal and avid following as that enjoyed by those older and more authentic cars.

William Morris could be considered one of the founding fathers of the British motor industry. Beginning his career in Oxford in the 1890’s as a cycle mechanic, he later branched out into the new motor trade and by 1910 had established himself as the proprietor of the Morris Garages, Oxford’s leading car dealer. Three years later he was to fulfil his ambition of becoming a motor manufacturer when the first Morris car went into production at Cowley, near Oxford.

In 1923 Cecil Kimber constructed the first MG. He started with a Morris Oxford chassis and mounted a reworked Hotchkiss engine in it. Around this skeleton he wrapped just enough sheet metal to enclose the working parts, squeezed two bucket seats inside, and finished off the rear with a flashy tapered boat tail. The fenders were a gesture, square cut and mounted away from the body on outriggers. Strangely enough this Model 1, with its rounded Cowley, bull nose and no windshield, presented a sleek, functional appearance. It still does. The first MG is still in fine running order and is shipped periodically around the world for the adoration of MG fans everywhere
